The Towel and the Basin

Peter motions to the disciple sitting next to Jesus, silently asking him to find out who the betrayer is. Peter needs to know.
This little detail shows Peter's characteristic need for action and information. He can't just sit with the uncertainty; he has to find out.
John describes Peter signaling across the table to the beloved disciple.
Peter catches John's eye across the table and gives him a look that says: ask Him. You're close enough. Find out who it is. It is a small, human moment in the middle of an enormously weighty scene.
Peter, unable to ask Jesus directly from his position, signals (neuei) to the beloved disciple to inquire about the betrayer's identity. This interplay highlights Peter's initiative and the beloved disciple's access.
The dynamic between Peter and the beloved disciple is a recurring motif in John's Gospel (cf. 20:2-8, 21:7, 20-23). Peter leads in initiative; the beloved disciple leads in intimacy.
John narrates Peter's nonverbal communication with the beloved disciple.
Peter, frustrated by his distance from Jesus, catches the beloved disciple's eye and gestures for him to ask Jesus who the betrayer is. The scene reveals the web of relationships in the upper room: Peter's boldness, the beloved disciple's closeness, and Jesus' sovereign knowledge.
22The disciples looked at one another, perplexed as to which of them He meant.
23One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at His side.
24So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about.
25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”
26Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel after I have dipped it.” Then He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
