The disciples look around the table at each other, completely confused. None of them can figure out who Jesus is talking about.
This is a sobering detail. Judas had hidden his intentions so well that even Jesus' closest friends had no idea. Betrayal often comes from the least expected source.
John describes the disciples' bewildered reaction.
Imagine the tension in that room. Everyone is looking at everyone else, searching faces for guilt. And Judas is sitting right there among them, and no one suspects a thing. Sometimes the greatest danger is the one you never see coming.
The disciples are perplexed (aporoumenoi), looking at one another in confusion, unable to identify the betrayer. Their bewilderment indicates Judas' deception was thorough.
The disciples' inability to identify Judas highlights the hiddenness of betrayal. In John's dramatic presentation, the revelation will come through intimate exchange, not public exposure.
John describes the disciples' collective confusion after Jesus' announcement.
The announcement creates a moment of bewildered silence. The disciples exchange glances, each wondering which of them Jesus could possibly mean. Judas' treachery had been so well concealed that no one suspected him, a chilling detail about the nature of betrayal.
