Jesus becomes 'troubled in spirit' (etarachthē tō pneumati), the same verb used in 11:33 and 12:27, indicating deep emotional agitation. He then testifies solemnly that one of the twelve will betray Him.

Language and setting

The announcement of betrayal at the meal table echoes the Synoptic tradition but is uniquely Johannine in its emphasis on Jesus' inner turmoil. The word 'testified' (emartysen) gives the announcement prophetic gravity.

Significance
