Jesus reveals His soul is 'troubled' (tetaraktai, a strong term indicating deep agitation), paralleling the Gethsemane agony in the Synoptics. He rejects the prayer for deliverance, affirming His salvific purpose.

Language and setting

This is John's equivalent of Gethsemane; John has no garden prayer scene. The rhetorical question followed by self-correction ('No, it is for this purpose...') reveals Jesus' full humanity wrestling with, and submitting to, His divine mission.

Significance
