The scholarly reading

Jesus defines the essence of discipleship as following Him (akolouthein), with the promise of shared presence and the Father's honor (timaō). Service and imitation are inseparable in Johannine thought.

Language and setting

The promise 'where I am, My servant will be' anticipates the farewell discourse (John 14:3). Being honored by the Father is the ultimate reward, surpassing any earthly recognition.
