Instead of asking to be saved from suffering, Jesus asks the Father to glorify His name. And God answers out loud for everyone to hear, promising He will.

This is one of only three times in the Gospels where God's voice is heard from heaven. It is a powerful moment of reassurance, not just for Jesus, but for everyone standing nearby.

Jesus turns His anguish into worship, asking not for comfort but for God's name to shine through whatever comes next. And then the sky speaks. God's voice breaks through, confirming that He has glorified His name and will do so again through the cross.

The scholarly reading

Jesus prays for the Father's name to be glorified, and a heavenly voice (bat qol) responds, affirming both past and future glorification. This is one of three divine auditions in the Gospels (cf. baptism, transfiguration).

Language and setting

The Father's response 'I have glorified it' refers to Jesus' signs and ministry; 'I will glorify it again' points to the cross and resurrection. The audible divine voice serves as heavenly testimony.

Significance
