God asks Job a genuinely unanswerable question: Were you anywhere near the moment creation itself began? Do you have any actual experience with how the world came into being?
Job has been speaking with such certainty about justice and God's nature, but here's the first of many questions that exposes the gap between what Job claims to understand and what he's actually witnessed or experienced.

This question launches God's entire response—a series of images that gradually expand Job's perspective from his own suffering to the vast, intricate, beautiful cosmos that God has brought into being and sustains.
God begins the interrogation by asking where Job was when the earth's foundations were laid, establishing that Job lacks firsthand knowledge of creation itself.
The Semitic root יָסַד (yasad, to found or establish) appears in the Ugaritic mythological texts describing the establishment of cosmic order. Job's ignorance of the foundational moment of creation is not merely temporal — he was not present — but epistemological: he has no participation in the act that constitutes cosmic stability. The Hebrew assumes that comprehension of present order requires knowledge of its originary moment. Origen and later patristic theology would connect this to the Logos as the principle through which 'all things were made' (John 1:3).

The question resonates with Proverbs 8:22-31, where Wisdom describes her presence at creation itself. By contrast, humans — even righteous ones like Job — are post-creational beings asking questions about a work whose principles and purposes precede their existence.
