False teachers were saying either that sin didn't matter (cheap grace) or that complete sinlessness was impossible (so don't even try). John's taking the middle ground: real believers don't practice sin habitually, and they have the protection of Christ himself.

This connects to 1 John 3:6-9. John's not saying believers never sin—he already said that's self-deception (1:8). But he's saying a pattern of unrepentant sin shows you haven't truly been transformed by God. Born-again people are different, and they have Jesus protecting them.

The scholarly reading

The person born of God does not habitually perpetuate sin but is protected by the One born of God—Christ—such that Satan cannot seize or destroy him, despite ongoing moral struggle.

Language and setting

The Greek construction (ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ τηρεῖ ἑαυτόν/the one born of God keeps himself) has generated debate about whether Christ or the believer is the subject of the protection. Most scholars now recognize this as divine passive: Christ keeps the believer. This assures persecuted communities that Satan's assaults cannot sever their relationship with God.

This echoes Jesus's high priestly prayer in John 17:12 ('While I was with them, I kept them in your name') and provides pastoral assurance against the cosmic dualism (God versus Satan) that characterized their threat environment.

16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he should ask God, who will give life to those who commit this kind of sin. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying he should ask regarding that sin.
