The 'sin leading to death' seems to be apostasy—walking away from Jesus entirely. That's different from a believer stumbling into sin and needing restoration. John wants his readers to understand: there's grace for the fallen believer, but not for the one who consciously rejects God.

All unrighteousness constitutes sin and stands under divine judgment, yet not every sin represents the irrevocable breaking of covenant relationship that John calls the sin leading to death.
