Why it's here

John's readers were living in a culture opposed to their faith. Materialism, idolatry, sexual immorality—these things were everywhere, and believers felt the pressure. John's reminding them: you're not part of that system anymore. You've been transferred to God's kingdom.

Where it sits in the story

This echoes the language of spiritual warfare throughout Scripture. The world is under Satan's influence (2 Corinthians 4:4), but believers are in Christ, and 'the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world' (1 John 4:4). You have a different citizenship now.

The scholarly reading

The believing community belongs to God and stands in positive alignment with him, while the unredeemed world system remains under Satan's dominion—a stark dichotomy dividing humanity.

Language and setting

This verse articulates the Johannine cosmos division: the world (κόσμος/kosmos) organized by values antithetical to God's revelation stands under the power of 'the evil one' (ὁ πονηρός/ho poneros). This is not gnostic dualism (two equal powers) but biblical monotheism with a theological anthropology: humanity is divided into two communities with opposite allegiances.
