Judah and Tamar

Tamar asks what pledge he'll give her—what security that he'll actually send the payment.
She's smart. She knows men make promises they don't keep. So she demands collateral—something that proves who he is and guarantees he'll follow through.
Tamar, pressing for assurance
Tamar is setting the trap perfectly. She's going to get proof of his identity, and it will be his own words and belongings that condemn him.
Tamar asks what security or pledge Judah will provide to guarantee payment once the transaction is complete.
Tamar's shrewdness is on full display: she recognizes that Judah might leave without paying—a legitimate concern in a culture where harlots were often cheated. The Hebrew וַיֹּאמֶר מַה־הַעֵרָבוֹן (vayomer mah-ha-arabon, 'what pledge should I give you') uses 'arabon (עֵרָבוֹן), a legal term for security or collateral. Tamar demands not payment in advance but assurance of payment through pledged objects. Her request is legally savvy—she recognizes she must secure proof of Judah's identity and obligation.
Tamar, negotiating with Judah
Tamar's demand for a pledge transforms what could have been a mere illicit encounter into a binding transaction with witnesses and evidence—she is, in effect, creating a contract that will later serve as the basis for establishing paternity and justice.
16Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”
17“I will send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah answered.
18“What pledge should I give you?” he asked.
19Then Tamar got up and departed. And she removed her veil and put on her widow’s garments again.
20Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
