After becoming a father, Arphaxad lived another 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
Even though people are living shorter lives than before, 403 years is still an extraordinary lifespan by modern standards. The point is that these people had long, productive lives and continued producing offspring throughout.
The narrator
The pattern continues: father, then more years, then other children. This genealogy is establishing that God's chosen line is robust and doesn't depend on just one heir per generation.
After fathering Shelah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three additional years and had other children.
