A descendant of King David who led the first wave of Jewish exiles back from Babylon to Jerusalem. Zerubbabel oversaw the rebuilding of the temple despite discouragement and opposition, a project that took over 20 years. The prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged him, with Zechariah declaring God’s promise: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.’ Zerubbabel appears in both Matthew’s and Luke’s genealogies of Jesus, maintaining the royal Davidic line through the exile.
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”Haggai 2:23 · Berean Standard Bible
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
The returned exiles lay the temple foundation. Some shout for joy; others weep remembering what was lost. Both responses are true.
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak rose up and began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them.
Haggai and Zechariah stir the people to build again. The governor investigates. A letter goes to the king — and this time, the answer favors God's people.
In the second year of the reign of Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, stating
The people are home from exile but focused on their own comfort. Haggai delivers a short, sharp message: rebuild the temple. Put first things first.
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
The glory of this house will be greater than the former. The people see a modest temple and weep — but God sees a future they can't imagine yet.
After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor.
