Language and setting

Zephaniah addresses Jerusalem in the final decades before the Babylonian exile (ca. 630-620 BCE), during a period of syncretism and social injustice under King Josiah's reign. The city's leadership had become characterized by exploitation rather than covenant faithfulness. Jerusalem's audience would have heard this as a stunning reversal of their privileged status as God's chosen city.
