Zephaniah announces a sweeping cosmic judgment: God will consume everything from the face of the earth—humans, animals, birds, fish. The focus narrows to Judah and Jerusalem, targeting idolatrous priests, those who worship Baal and the starry host, and complacent citizens who say 'The LORD will do nothing.' The Day of the LORD is described in terrifying detail.
Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of Josiah (640-609 BC), likely before or during the early stages of Josiah's reforms. His royal lineage (traced to Hezekiah) gave him unique access to the court. The syncretistic worship he condemns reflects the religious corruption inherited from Manasseh's reign.
