Paul is being careful not to exclude Jewish believers. He's saying circumcision doesn't disqualify you—but it also doesn't automatically make you Abraham's child. What makes you Abraham's real descendant is imitating his faith. If you're Jewish but don't have his trust in God, you're missing what made Abraham actually Abraham.

This is a profound redefining of inheritance. Spiritual inheritance in God's family isn't about genetics or ritual—it's about character, specifically the character of trusting God.

The scholarly reading

Abraham is also the father of those who are circumcised—but only if they follow in the footsteps of his faith before circumcision, not if they rest on circumcision alone.

Language and setting

This verse contains Paul's critical qualification: being circumcised does not automatically secure one's status as Abraham's true offspring. The phrase stoichountes tois ichnesin (walking in the footsteps) invokes Septuagintal language of following in someone's path (see LXX 1 Peter 2:21). Paul distinguishes between ethnic circumcision and faithful circumcision—between the sign and the substance it signifies. This would have been shocking rhetoric to Jewish listeners: circumcision, the supreme covenantal marker, is here subordinated to faith.

Even Jewish believers are redefined: their true identity derives not from circumcision per se but from their participation in Abraham's faith-pattern. The covenant line runs through faith, not through flesh.
