Why it's here

After the gut-punch of verse 23, Paul offers the solution. These Roman Christians—some wealthy, some slaves, some uncertain of their standing—need to know they don't have to earn this. It's a gift. The word 'redemption' here actually means 'ransom,' like paying a price to free someone from slavery.

This is the core of the gospel. The sacrificial system in the Old Testament was pointing toward this moment—a final, complete payment that would end all other sacrifices. Jesus is that payment.

The scholarly reading

God freely declares people righteous through Jesus's redemptive death—not because they've earned it, but because Christ's sacrifice has broken the power of sin and guilt.

Language and setting

In a Roman society saturated with legal contracts and transactional relationships, Paul's language of 'freely' (δωρεάν, gratuitously) must have sounded almost absurd. Why would the highest power offer the deepest benefit without transaction? Yet Paul insists: justification is pure gift, unearned favor. The word 'redemption' (ἀπολύτρωσις) evokes the ransom price of emancipation—Christ pays what we cannot.

Significance

Israel's exodus from Egypt was the paradigmatic redemption story—God buying back His people at great cost (Exodus 6:6). Now in Christ, a cosmic exodus occurs: liberation from sin's slavery, purchased not by Egyptian plagues but by Christ's blood.

22And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,

23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

24and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

25God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice in His blood through faith, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.

26He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
