Language and setting

Charismata (gifts) in Paul's theology are not innate talents but divine enablements for building up the community. The Corinthian correspondence had exposed how unguided charismatic enthusiasm could fracture congregations, so here Paul emphasizes proportion and faith-calibration. Ambrosiaster (fourth-century) stressed that gifts are never possessions but rather God's ongoing loan for service. The list in verse 6 begins with prophecy—ranking it prominently, as Paul does throughout, as a gift for direct communication of God's will.

Significance
