This is one of Paul's most revolutionary ideas. In a world organized by hierarchy and division, he's saying the church is fundamentally one—not despite differences, but including them. This is what Jesus's death and resurrection made possible.

Believers are not merely individuals who happen to share faith; they are mutually constitutive members of a single corporate body, bound to and dependent upon one another.

Language and setting

The phrase 'in Christ' (en Christō) indicates incorporation into Christ's person and work—a mystical union that Paul articulates throughout his letters. The reciprocal obligation 'belong to one another' (allelōn) would have struck Roman readers with particular force given the hierarchical patronage systems that dominated their social world. Bengel noted that Paul moves from anatomical description to christological reality: the connection between members is not merely functional but ontological—rooted in their shared participation in Christ's body.
