Why it's here

The Roman church had wealthy people and poor people, educated people and uneducated people, citizens and slaves. Breaking bread together required that the powerful consciously choose not to separate themselves from the lowly.

Where it sits in the story

This turns upside down how society normally works. Jesus's kingdom constantly honored the overlooked and lifted up the lowly. Paul is saying the church should reflect that value.

The scholarly reading

The community must live in unified harmony while actively rejecting pride and deliberately associating with those of lower social status.

Language and setting

Homodōnēo (live in harmony—literally 'think the same thing') might initially suggest enforced conformity, but the context clarifies: it means aligned affection and shared values, not thought control. The command 'do not be proud' (mē phronountes ta heauton, literally 'not minding your own things') echoes verse 3's warning against inflated self-assessment. The phrase 'associate with the lowly' (tois tapeinois) literally 'the humble ones' but carries connotations of social inferiority in Roman context—slaves, manual laborers, those without patronage networks. This was scandalous: for a person of status to voluntarily associate with the lowly was to forfeit honor in the eyes of their peers. Calvin noted that this verse attacks the very foundation of Mediterranean social hierarchy.

Significance
