Living Sacrifice
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 · Berean Standard Bible
When something good happens to someone you care about, actually celebrate with them. When they're suffering, genuinely grieve alongside them.
It's easy to be glad when you win or sad about your own problems. Paul is asking for empathy that costs you something—entering into other people's experiences and feeling what they feel.
Paul, calling for emotional honesty in community
Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb and celebrated at weddings. He didn't stay emotionally detached. Paul is calling believers to this same kind of full-hearted participation in each other's lives.
Believers should cultivate emotional solidarity with others—genuinely rejoicing when others are blessed and genuinely grieving when others suffer.
Chairō (rejoice) and klaió (weep) demand emotional participation in others' lived reality rather than detached benevolence. The phrase 'with those who rejoice' and 'with those who weep' indicates sympathetic identification (literally meta—'with'). This was revolutionary in a culture where stoicism taught the suppression of emotion and where status differences typically prevented social identification across class lines. Romans 15:25 shows Paul himself practiced this: he wept for the Jerusalem church's hardship. The Church fathers interpreted this as a refutation of apatheia (the stoic ideal of emotionlessness); Christian virtue requires affective participation in the body's joy and pain.

This recalls Jesus weeping at Lazarus's tomb and his anguish in Gethsemane—divinity expressing solidarity through embodied emotion. It insists that the resurrection body Christ inaugurates is not a disembodied abstraction but a resurrected physicality.

16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited.
17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody.
