Paul continues his contrast. He's showing that faith-righteousness requires no heroic spiritual gymnastics. You're not responsible for engineering Christ's incarnation or resurrection. Those are completed works you receive, not accomplishments you achieve.

Nor does faith require descending to the abyss to bring Christ up from the dead—another unnecessary human effort since Christ's resurrection has already occurred.

The parallel construction emphasizes the symmetrical futility of both cosmic endeavors. The 'abyss' (ἄβυσσος) echoes Deuteronomy 30:13 and reflects Jewish cosmological thought; Paul's reapplication transforms it into an image of what believers do not need to accomplish. His historical audience—early Christians perhaps still working through the implications of resurrection faith—needed reassurance that salvation required neither spiritual achievement nor metaphysical manipulation.

Significance

This verse affirms the bodily, historical character of Christian hope: Christ is not a spiritual principle to be mystically acquired but a risen person who has been raised. Faith appropriates this objective reality rather than creating it through spiritual exertion.

5For concerning the righteousness that is by the law, Moses writes: “The man who does these things will live by them.”

6But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)

7or, ‘Who will descend into the Abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”

8But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:

9that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
