The scholarly reading

The angel certifies that the entire vision is trustworthy and true, and that God has sent him to reveal to the churches what is about to occur.

Language and setting

Apocalyptic texts were proliferating in John's era—some authentic, many fraudulent. By having the angel invoke divine authentication ('faithful and true,' pistos kai alethinos), John establishes his work's authority against competing visions while addressing the anxiety of churches uncertain which revelations to trust.

This marks the transition from vision to interpretation and exhortation. The phrase 'what must soon take place' (dei genesthai) uses the necessity language of Daniel's apocalyptic—the unfolding is divinely ordained, not contingent. This positions Revelation within the prophetic tradition stretching from Isaiah through Daniel to Jesus.

4They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.

5There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.

6Then the angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel to show His servants what must soon take place.”
