Instead of people traveling up to heaven, John sees heaven coming down to earth as a beautiful city—the new Jerusalem—arriving like a bride ready for her wedding day.

Why it's here

This image would have shocked John's readers in a beautiful way. They'd been told heaven was far away; now they're learning that God's home and human home are merging. The bride imagery also echoes the church as Christ's bride—this is the ultimate union.

Genesis began with God and humanity in intimate fellowship in a garden; Revelation ends with God and humanity together in a city. The relationship that was broken is being fully restored.

Significance

The bridal motif connects backward to Eve as the first bride (Genesis 2:22), through the covenantal marriage language of Hosea and Jeremiah, to Paul's ecclesiology in Ephesians 5:25-27 (the church as the Bride of Christ), arriving here at its consummation. The city itself becomes the collective bride.

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

2I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.

4‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”
