Psalm 55:6

Betrayed by a Friend

I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. Psalm 55:6 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Psalm 55:6, in plain English

David wishes he could escape completely—just sprout wings and fly away to someplace quiet and safe where none of this matters anymore.

Why it's here

This isn't him giving up on his problems; it's him fantasizing about escape the way someone under extreme stress naturally does. He wants out, away, gone.

Who's speaking

David, expressing the natural human desire to flee when circumstances become unbearable

Where it sits in the story

Even spiritual people want to run sometimes. The psalms never pretend otherwise. What matters is where you go instead—and David's about to redirect that impulse toward God.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Unable to endure his present circumstances, the psalmist fantasizes about escape—wishing for a dove's wings to flee to wilderness safety.

Language and setting

The optative formula 'Oh, that I had' (לוּ־לִי, lû-lî) introduces a counterfactual wish, a rhetorical form indicating despair at present remedies. The dove (יוֹנָה, yônâ) carried symbolic weight in Israelite consciousness—associated with innocence, swiftness, and access to inaccessible places. Notably, this is fantasy, not covenant prayer: the psalmist does not here ask God for deliverance, but envies the dove's natural freedom.

Voice

The psalmist in his desperation, expressing the fantasy that precedes true prayer.

Significance

This moment of wishing for escape without petition forms a transition—it acknowledges the inadequacy of human autonomy and sets up the recovery of faith in divine agency that follows in verse 16. Medieval commentators like Cassiodorus read this as the soul's recognition that earthly flight cannot solve spiritual predicaments.

In context

Psalm 55:4–8

4My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death assail me.

5Fear and trembling grip me, and horror has overwhelmed me.

6I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest.

7How far away I would flee! In the wilderness I would remain.

8I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”

Read all of Psalm 55 — If an enemy attacked, I could bear it. But it was you — my companion, my close friend. The deepest wounds come from the nearest people.
