Before land, fields, or even dust—the raw material of earth itself—came into being, Wisdom was already present.
Now you're getting to the very basics: the dust from which Adam was formed in Genesis. Wisdom precedes even that. The progression in these verses keeps going deeper and earlier into creation's timeline. Anyone listening would be getting the picture: Wisdom isn't secondary or added on; she's foundational to everything.
Wisdom, completing the picture of what didn't exist yet when she did.
Genesis 2:7 describes God forming man from the dust of the ground. Wisdom was there before that dust was shaped into anything.
Even the earth itself and its most basic substance—dust and soil—postdate Wisdom's existence, making her prior to the very ground of material being.
The progression reaches its nadir: from waters to mountains to the earth's *solid matter itself*. *עָפָר* (afar, 'dust') deliberately evokes human creation (Genesis 2:7) and human mortality (Genesis 3:19), reminding the audience that Wisdom precedes even the stuff from which humanity springs.
Lady Wisdom's self-disclosure continues to strip away every possible material referent, leaving only her and God before creation's inception.
This echoes Job's wrestling with divine inscrutability and creation's mysteries; it establishes a theological anthropology where humans, formed from dust, desperately need wisdom that transcends their material nature.
24When there were no watery depths, I was brought forth, when no springs were overflowing with water.
