At that very moment, the curtain of the temple tears in two from top to bottom. The earth shakes and rocks split apart.
That curtain separated people from God's presence. Only one priest could go through it, once a year. When Jesus died, God ripped it open — from His side, top to bottom. The way to God is now open to everyone.

Heaven responds to what just happened. The barrier is torn. The ground shakes. Creation itself announces that everything has changed.
The temple veil (katapetasma tou naou) tears from top to bottom (ap anothen heos kato), the earth quakes, and rocks split — cosmic signs signaling the end of the old covenant order and the opening of access to God's presence.
The veil separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple; only the high priest could pass through it once a year. Its tearing from top to bottom (divine action, not human) symbolizes the removal of the barrier between God and humanity.
