Then they sit down and keep watch over Him there.
For the soldiers, this is just another day on duty. They have no idea they are guarding the most significant event in the history of the world.
The narrator describes the soldiers settling in for their guard duty.
They sit like they have sat at a hundred crucifixions before. They do not know they are watching God save the world.
The soldiers sit down to keep watch (eteroun) over Jesus, fulfilling their duty as guards — their casual posture contrasting starkly with the cosmic significance of what they witness.
The guard duty was standard practice to prevent rescue attempts and ensure death. The soldiers' sitting posture signals routine boredom — they have no awareness of what is happening above them.
