The scholarly reading

The one-talent servant takes a radically different approach: he 'dug a hole' (oryxen gēn) and 'hid' (ekrypsen) his master's money. Burying valuables was a common form of safekeeping in antiquity (cf. Matt 13:44), but here it represents the refusal to take any risk with what was entrusted.

Language and setting

In rabbinic law, burying money was considered a responsible way to safeguard deposits. But Jesus redefines the expectation: the master wants growth, not merely preservation.
