Calling Jesus 'Lord' isn't enough if your life doesn't match your words. These women knew the right language but didn't do the right preparation.

It's heartbreaking. They say the right words. They know who He is. But knowing about Him isn't the same as being ready for Him.

The scholarly reading

The late-arriving virgins plead, 'Lord, lord' (kyrie kyrie) — the doubled vocative expressing urgency — 'open to us!' (anoixon hēmin). Their use of 'Lord' (kyrios) echoes Matthew 7:21-23, where Jesus warns that not everyone who calls Him 'Lord' will enter the kingdom.

Language and setting

The parallel with 7:21-23 is deliberate: verbal profession of faith ('Lord, Lord') without corresponding preparation and obedience is insufficient for entrance into the kingdom.

The foolish virgins speak from outside the closed door, desperately addressing the bridegroom as 'Lord.'

Significance

Knocking on a closed door, crying 'Lord, Lord!' — the desperation is palpable. But the title on their lips cannot compensate for the oil missing from their lamps.

9‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.

12But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’

13Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
