What It Means

Matthew 25:10, in plain English

While the foolish women are gone, the bridegroom arrives. The prepared women go in to the celebration, and then the door is shut. That closed door is final.

This is sobering but important. There comes a moment when the opportunity to be ready has passed. Jesus is urging you to be prepared now, while the door is still open.

The scholarly reading

While the foolish virgins are away buying oil, the bridegroom arrives, and 'those who were ready' (hai hetoimoi) enter the wedding banquet (tous gamous). Then 'the door was shut' (ekleisthē hē thyra). The closed door symbolizes the finality of eschatological judgment — a point of no return.

Language and setting

The shutting of the door echoes Luke 13:25 and Revelation 3:7-8. It represents the moment when opportunity for entrance permanently ends. God's patience has a boundary.

Voice

Jesus narrates the climactic moment: the prepared enter joy while the unprepared are excluded by a closed door.

Significance

The bridegroom arrives, the prepared enter, and the door shuts. That shut door is the most sobering image in the parable — opportunity has a deadline.
