The scholarly reading

The wicked servant's behavior reveals his heart: he 'beats' (typtein) his fellow servants and 'eats and drinks with drunkards' (meta tōn methyontōn). Abuse of others and self-indulgence are the twin fruits of spiritual presumption. Power without accountability always corrupts.

Language and setting

The mistreatment of fellow servants especially targets abusive church leaders. The warning is pointed: those entrusted with care of God's people will face severe judgment for exploitation.
