The scholarly reading

Jesus prophesies the Temple's total destruction: 'not one stone will be left on another' (ou mē aphethē hōde lithos epi lithon). This was fulfilled precisely in 70 AD when Titus' Roman legions dismantled the Temple stone by stone, reportedly to recover gold that had melted between the stones during the fire.

Language and setting

This prophecy connects directly to the declaration in 23:38 ('your house is left desolate') and initiates the Olivet Discourse that follows. It also echoes Micah 3:12 and Jeremiah 26:18.

Jesus responds to His disciples with a solemn prophetic declaration, introduced by 'Truly I tell you' (amēn legō hymin).

Significance

Jesus' words must have been staggering. This magnificent structure, the center of Jewish life and worship, would be completely demolished. And forty years later, it was.
