Signs of the End

As they leave the Temple, the disciples point out how impressive the buildings are. They're proud of this magnificent structure, not realizing what Jesus is about to say.
Herod's Temple was one of the wonders of the ancient world. The disciples' awe is completely understandable, which makes what Jesus says next all the more shocking.
The disciples are speaking to Jesus, admiring the Temple's beauty and grandeur.
Put yourself in their shoes. You're walking past this breathtaking building, and you point it out to your teacher. The last thing you expect is what He says next.
As Jesus departs the Temple, His disciples draw His attention to the Temple buildings (oikodomas tou hierou). The Temple complex, rebuilt by Herod the Great beginning in 19 BC, was an architectural marvel with massive stones and lavish decoration.
The disciples' admiration of the Temple sets up Jesus' shocking prophecy of its destruction. Their pride in the physical structure contrasts with Jesus' just-pronounced spiritual judgment on it.
The narrator describes the scene; the disciples initiate the conversation by pointing out the Temple's grandeur.
The disciples are still marveling at the magnificent Temple as they walk away. They have no idea that Jesus is about to tell them it will all come crashing down.

2“Do you see all these things?” He replied. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
3While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”
