The scholarly reading

Jesus presents the parallel case with the altar (thysiastērion): swearing by the altar is non-binding, but swearing by the gift (dōron) upon it is binding. The same flawed logic elevates the offering over the altar that consecrates it.

Language and setting

This second example reinforces the pattern: the Pharisees consistently value the material offering over the sacred institution, revealing their materialistic orientation.
