The scholarly reading

Jesus overturns their reasoning with a logical argument: the temple (naos) sanctifies (hagiasas) the gold within it, making the temple greater than its contents. Their distinction elevates the derivative over the source, revealing inverted priorities and spiritual blindness.

Language and setting

Jesus' argument follows a greater-to-lesser logic (qal wahomer): if the gold is sacred only because the temple makes it so, then the temple is obviously greater than the gold.

Jesus rebukes the Pharisees as 'blind fools' (moroi kai typhloi), one of His harshest designations.

Significance

Jesus demolishes their logic with simple common sense. Which came first — the temple or the gold? The container sanctifies the contents, not the other way around.
