The Last Will Be First
and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave— Matthew 20:27 · Berean Standard Bible
And if you want to be first, you must be the slave of everyone.
Jesus takes it one step further. Not just a helper — a slave. Someone with no claim to recognition or rights.
Jesus raises the stakes even higher on what real leadership costs.
First place in the kingdom doesn't come with a crown. It comes with a towel.
Jesus intensifies: whoever wants to be 'first' (prōtos) must be a 'slave' (doulos) — the most extreme form of service, with no rights or status.
Doulos is stronger than diakonos; Jesus escalates from servant to slave, emphasizing total self-giving without claim to honor.
Jesus pushes the servant-leadership principle to its radical extreme.
Jesus goes further than servant — He says slave. The one who wants the top position must take the absolute bottom.
25But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
26It shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
27and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave—
28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.
