Jesus left the house and sat by the lake, getting ready to teach. It was going to be a day of stories.
When a rabbi sat down, it meant official teaching was about to begin. Jesus is about to share some of His most memorable parables.
Matthew sets the scene.
Jesus picks a beautiful setting -- the lakeside -- and sits down to teach. What follows will be some of the most famous stories ever told.
Jesus exits the house and sits beside the sea (para ten thalassan), transitioning from private settings to the public lakeside that will serve as the venue for His major parable discourse.
The movement from house to sea marks a new section in Matthew's narrative. Sitting (ekatheto) was the posture of an authorized teacher in Jewish tradition, signaling that formal instruction is about to begin.
