Coming Down the Mountain

Jesus continued, 'If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. Better to enter life unable to walk than to walk straight into hell with both feet.'
Your walk — where you go, what you pursue, the paths you take — matters. If a path leads you away from God, stop walking it, no matter how comfortable it feels.
Jesus presses the same point with a different image.
It's the same urgent message: if something in your life is pulling you away from God, it's not worth keeping. The temporary loss is nothing compared to what you gain.
The foot that causes sin follows the same logic as the hand: radical self-discipline is preferable to entering 'hell' (geennan) intact. 'Entering life lame' paradoxically presents disability as salvation.
The progression from hand to foot to eye (v.47) covers the primary instruments of human action, movement, and desire — a comprehensive call to holiness.

Jesus extends the metaphor: if your foot leads you into sin, remove it. Better to limp into the kingdom than to walk confidently into destruction. The cost of discipleship is always less than the cost of sin.
