What It Means

Mark 9:43, in plain English

Jesus said, 'If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter life without it than to have both hands and end up in hell.' He was deadly serious about sin.

Why it's here

Jesus isn't saying to literally harm yourself. He's saying: whatever leads you to sin, remove it from your life completely. Don't negotiate with what destroys you.

The scholarly reading

The command to 'cut off' an offending hand uses radical hyperbole (hyperbolē) to stress the absolute priority of entering 'life' (zōēn) over preserving wholeness while heading to 'hell' (geennan) — the 'unquenchable fire.'

Language and setting

Gehenna refers to the Valley of Hinnom outside Jerusalem, associated with child sacrifice (2 Kings 23:10) and used as a refuse dump — a vivid metaphor for final judgment.
