Coming Down the Mountain
After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them. Mark 9:2 · Berean Standard Bible
Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain — just the four of them. And there, right before their eyes, He was completely transformed.
After telling them He would suffer, Jesus showed them something they would never forget — a glimpse of who He truly is beneath the surface.
Mark describes the most extraordinary moment the disciples had ever witnessed.
Imagine climbing a mountain with your teacher and friend, and then watching Him begin to glow with a light that doesn't come from any earthly source. Everything you thought you knew about Him suddenly got bigger.
The Transfiguration (metemorphothe) reveals Jesus' divine glory to the inner circle of Peter, James, and John. 'After six days' may echo Moses' six-day wait before entering God's glory cloud on Sinai (Exodus 24:16).
The high mountain, inner circle, and divine transformation deliberately parallel the Sinai theophany, positioning Jesus as the new and greater Moses.
Mark narrates the extraordinary event on the mountain.
Six days after the confession at Caesarea Philippi, Jesus leads His three closest disciples up a mountain and is transfigured — His hidden glory breaking through the veil of ordinary humanity.
1Then Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.”
2After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them.
3His clothes became radiantly white, brighter than any launderer on earth could bleach them.
4And Elijah and Moses appeared before them, talking with Jesus.
