Coming Down the Mountain
Then Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.” Mark 9:1 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus told them, 'Some of you standing here will see the kingdom of God come with power before you die.' Something extraordinary was about to happen.
After heavy talk about suffering and self-denial, Jesus gave them a promise of hope. The kingdom isn't just coming someday — it's breaking through right now.
Jesus speaks a powerful promise to those around Him.
After the weight of everything He'd just said about the cross, Jesus offered a glimpse of glory. Something was coming that would give them the strength to keep going.
The solemn 'Truly I tell you' (amen lego hymin) introduces a promise that some present will witness the kingdom of God arriving 'with power' (en dynamei). Interpretations range from the Transfiguration to Pentecost to the destruction of Jerusalem.
This saying bridges the Passion prediction and the Transfiguration, linking suffering with manifestations of divine glory.
Jesus makes a prophetic declaration to those gathered around Him.
