Jesus makes the contrast explicit and devastating: 'You have disregarded (aphentes) the commandment (entolen) of God to keep (krateite) the tradition (paradosin) of men.' The verbs are damning — they release God's commands while gripping human traditions.

Language and setting

The wordplay between 'letting go' (aphiemi) of God's command and 'holding fast' (krateo) to human tradition exposes inverted priorities. What should be held is released; what should be flexible is rigidly maintained.
