Now the disciples are even more shaken than during the storm. They look at each other and whisper, 'Who IS this? Even the wind and waves do what he says!'
Their fear has shifted. It's no longer the storm that terrifies them — it's Jesus. They're beginning to realize they're in the presence of someone far greater than they imagined.
The disciples speak to one another, stunned and overwhelmed by what just happened.
The storm revealed something even bigger than nature's fury: Jesus' true identity. The disciples' question hangs in the air — 'Who is this?' — and it's the question that changes everything.
The disciples are 'overwhelmed with fear' (ephobethesan phobon megan, a Semitic cognate accusative intensifier), indicating their terror at Jesus' power now exceeds their fear of the storm. Their question 'Who is this?' is Mark's central christological query.
The question echoes Psalm 89:8-9, where only Yahweh rules the raging sea. The disciples' awe-filled question drives Mark's entire narrative toward the confession of 8:29 and the centurion's declaration in 15:39.
The disciples speak among themselves in astonished fear, grappling with Jesus' identity.
Replacing storm-terror with holy awe, the disciples ask the question Mark wants every reader to answer: 'Who is this man that even wind and waves obey him?'
39Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. “Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm.
40“Why are you so afraid?” He asked. “Do you still have no faith?”
