The scholarly reading

Jesus rebukes (epetimesen) the wind and commands the sea 'Silence! Be still!' (Siopa, pephimoso) — the same verb (phimoo) used to silence the demon in 1:25. The perfect imperative pephimoso demands a permanent state of calm.

Language and setting

Jesus exercises authority over nature using language identical to his exorcisms, suggesting Mark views the storm as a manifestation of chaotic forces opposed to God's order (cf. Ps 89:9; 65:7).

Significance

39Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. “Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm.

40“Why are you so afraid?” He asked. “Do you still have no faith?”

41Overwhelmed with fear, they asked one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
