The crowd sitting around Him told Him, 'Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for You.'
Inside: a crowd hanging on every word Jesus said. Outside: His biological family wanting to take Him home. The stage was set for one of Jesus' most radical teachings about what family really means.
The crowd passes along the message that Jesus' family is waiting outside.
Two groups, separated by a wall. One group related by blood. The other group related by faith. Jesus was about to say something that would redefine family forever.
The crowd relayed the message: 'Your mother and brothers are outside (exō), asking for You'—the word exō ('outside') contrasting with the insiders gathered around Jesus.
The spatial language of inside/outside carries theological weight in Mark: being 'inside' with Jesus represents discipleship and understanding, while 'outside' represents exclusion from the kingdom's mysteries (cf. 4:11).
The crowd informs Jesus of His family's presence outside, using language that Mark layers with theological significance.
The crowd's message set up Jesus' revolutionary teaching: physical family standing outside would be contrasted with the spiritual family sitting inside, and the latter would be given priority.
