Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived and stood outside, sending someone in to call Him.
Remember, His family had come to take Him home because they thought He'd lost His mind. Now they were outside, sending a message in—still not part of the inner circle.
Mark picks up the earlier family storyline, showing Jesus' mother and brothers arriving at the crowded house.
They stood outside. That detail matters. The people inside, sitting at Jesus' feet, were closer to Him in that moment than His own family standing at the door.
Jesus' mother and brothers (hē mētēr autou kai hoi adelphoi autou) arrived and stood outside (exō stēkontes), sending word inside to summon Him.
This passage connects back to verse 21, completing the Markan sandwich structure: family's concern (v.21) → scribes' accusation (vv.22-30) → family's arrival (vv.31-35). The 'brothers' likely refers to biological siblings or close relatives.
Mark narrates the arrival of Jesus' family, resuming the narrative interrupted by the Beelzebul controversy.
The family's position 'outside' becomes theologically significant: they are physically and metaphorically on the outside of the community gathered around Jesus, setting up His radical redefinition of family.
29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.”
30Jesus made this statement because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
31Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came and stood outside. They sent someone in to summon Him,
32and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look,” He was told, “Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for You.”
33But Jesus replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
