So they took the coward's way out: 'We don't know.' And Jesus said, 'Then I won't answer your question either.' Checkmate.
Jesus wasn't being evasive — He was making a point. If they wouldn't honestly engage with the truth they already had, more truth wouldn't help them.
The religious leaders answer Jesus, and He replies to close the exchange.
The leaders walked away without the answer they demanded, but everyone watching knew who had won that exchange. Jesus' wisdom left His opponents speechless.
The leaders' 'we do not know' (Greek: ouk oidamen) is a calculated evasion, not genuine uncertainty — and Jesus' refusal to answer reciprocates their intellectual dishonesty.
Jesus' response demonstrates that genuine dialogue requires honest engagement; those who refuse to evaluate evidence forfeit the right to demand answers.

The exchange ends in a standoff that exposes the leaders' bad faith. Jesus withholds His answer not from inability but from the principle that truth is wasted on the willfully blind.
31They deliberated among themselves what they should answer: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will ask, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
32But if we say, ‘From men’...” they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John truly was a prophet.
33So they answered, “We do not know.”
