And if they said John was just a man? They were too afraid to say that, because everyone believed John was a true prophet.
They were trapped by their own cowardice. They couldn't deny John without angering the people, and they couldn't affirm John without validating Jesus.
The religious leaders continue weighing their options privately.
It's almost comical — the most powerful religious leaders in Israel, paralyzed by a single question. Their authority depended on appearances, and Jesus exposed it.
The leaders fear the crowd's reaction if they deny John's prophetic status, revealing that public opinion, not theological conviction, governs their positions.
The widespread belief in John as a genuine prophet constrains the leaders politically, just as the crowd's admiration of Jesus prevents His immediate arrest.
