John distinguishes his water baptism from the coming Spirit baptism (baptisei en pneumati hagiō) that Jesus will administer, marking a decisive eschatological upgrade.

The promise of Spirit baptism fulfills Joel 2:28-29 and Ezekiel 36:26-27, where God promised to pour out His Spirit on all flesh and place His Spirit within His people in the messianic age.
